Wat Sema Mueang is an ancient temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. It was founded in 1318 by the king of that era to serve as the center of Buddhism. It is the oldest temple with evidence of this, as evidenced by stone inscriptions excavated within the temple grounds. This temple is also associated with "Luang Phor Thuad," a revered figure among both Thais and foreigners. Luang Phor Thuad traveled to study the Dhamma at Wat Sema Mueang from the time he was a novice until he was old enough to be ordained. PhraKru Ka Derm, the abbot at the time, used four boats to build a raft in the canal in front of the temple to perform the ordination ceremony for Luang Phor Thuad in the middle of the water. Wat Sema Mueang is therefore considered to be the true birthplace of the monk Luang Phor Thuad. Many locals affectionately called it "Wat Samphao" to this day. When Luang Phor Thuat had completed his higher Dhamma studies at Wat Sema Mueang, he returned to his hometown before continuing on to Ayutthaya, which led to the legend of Luang Phor Thuad stepping on the fresh sea water, which has been talked about endlessly to this day.
