Chaleo, it is a sacred symbol that is believed to have the power of Khamkhong (invulnerability). In the central region, it is called "Chaleo". In the North and Isan, it is called "Talaeo" or "Ta Laew". In some southern regions, it is called "Talio" or "Talaeo", which is wisdom combined with beliefs in folklore. Furthermore, in the countryside, every region of Thailand believes that carrying "Chaleo" with you or hanging "Chaleo" at the front door, fence, or window will keep ghosts, bad luck, and black magic out of the house. The belief in hanging "Chaleo" to ward off evil is not limited to the peasants. People enjoy hanging Chaleo in temples, monasteries, sanctuaries, and pavilions. The belief in the creation of Chaleo is very complex. The selection of bamboo is to select the best wood for making this sacred amulet. By selecting bamboo stems in the middle of the clump and splitting bamboo in half to make thin bamboo strips. Do not split bamboo buds. "Chaleo" is made to protect from danger in the forest or to temporarily dispel bad omens in that area. It is popular to make Chaleo with 3 and 5 prongs, but their powers are not different. For example, in the case of wanting to cross vines or encountering a forest tree that is believed to have a mystery, the hunter will pull the cogon grass or grass tops and break them into 3 or 5 prongs and stick them in. Or in the case of having to make a tent for the night on a tree, the cogon grass will be used to make a "Chaleo" and stuck in the tree to ward off the ghosts of that tree. Ancient people believed that the five-cornered shape (or star shape) provided protection from evil and black magic.
